COSTA BLANCA

Costa Blanca takes up the stretch of Mediterranean coast that corresponds to the province of Alicante , a great example of what is known as Mediterranean landscape.
The traveller can choose any part of this coastline, from the liveliest, most cosmopolitan stretch to areas that still maintain a rural feel. Wherever you decide to go, try to visit the neighbouring regions where you can discover the beautiful Mediterranean landscape. The horizons of the Costa Blanca feature many different types of attractions ranging from the valleys, where the memory of its Moorish past is kept alive in its terraced vegetable gardens, to the palm trees. The climate is also variable. The temperature is generally mild the annual average being slightly higher than 17ºC with little rainfall, and in the northern mountains in the area, the rainfall is logically higher than that registered in the lowland surrounding Elche and Orihuela. The combination of almond tree fields, vineyards, orchards and magnificent palm trees creates a type of vegetation that is unique in Europe .

COSTA BRAVA

Whitewashed fishing villages, crystalline seawater, underwater paradise areas and nature reserves with deep green, untouched landscapes, small coves, hidden between rocky outcrops you find it all at the Costa Brava . Tourist towns like Lloret de Mar, Cadaqués and Roses. The Costa Brava forms a large tract of the Catalonian coast. It is proud of its traditions, birth-place and source of inspiration to Salvador Dalí, and home to impressive monuments and a wealth of history.
With rugged cliffs, pine forests, hidde n coves and dream beaches, this is one of Spain 's most picturesque areas: the Costa Brava , a land of sea, light, north winds and fishermen. History and art in the form of archaeological sites, monasteries, churches, bridges, monumental sites, fiestas and age-old celebrations, which all give a unique character to this area, stretching more than 200 kilometres over the north of Catalonia , in the province of Girona .
Thanks to its excellent climate, this part of the Catalonian coast has been one of the most sought-after destinations for tourists from all over the world for decades, enjoying a wide range of cultural activities all year round. Concerts, festivals and popular celebrations fill its towns and villages with music, colour, and joy. Come and savour a rum cremat as you listen to habaneras (traditional songs that evoke sea journeys of times gone by) on summer nights in Calella de Palafrugell. Travel back to the middle ages in Verges and watch the frightening Dança de la Mort (Dance of death). Discover the spectacular firework competition (one of the worlds most important) In Blanes, or visit the unique Perelada Castle during its prestigious, internationally renowned music festival.
The Costa Brava also has an impressive variety of priceless historical-artistic heritage. This is the area's artistic and cultural inheritance. Take your time to explore the area's villages, enjoying exceptional landscapes all the while, including Romanesque churches and monasteries such as Sant Pere de Rodes, in Port de la Selva, the ancient citadel at Roses, the Greco-Roman ruins at Empúries, Catalonia's most visited archaeological site - the medieval town of Pals or Palamós , the walled town of Tossa de Mar, or, a little further into the interior, loose yourself in the unique old town of Girona, with its winding, age-old cobbled streets. Alternatively, In Figueres you can admire the art of surrealist genius Salvador Dalí, the Costa Brava 's great international ambassador.
This wonderful part of the Catalonian coast inspired great artists such as Picasso, Klein and Marc Chagall, but it was surely Dalí who brought international fame to this corner of the Mediterranean . He was born and died in Figueres and the artist's mark can be seen throughout the village. Here you will find the Dalí Theatre Museum a work in itself, it is a must-see with its "egg-topped" towers and the huge dome beneath which the painter's remains lie at rest. Just a few kilometres away you will find Cadaques, one of the Costa Brava 's most emblematic villages, with its white fishermen's houses, home to the Salvador Dalí House Museum , in Portlligat, the artist's refuge, where he painted the majority of his greatest works. In the interior once again you will find the Castell Gala-Dalí House Museum , in Púbol , with its garden of surrealist elephants and the crypt where Gala, the genius' muse, is buried.
Every year the Costa Brava , with its exceptional leisure and hotel infrastructure, attracts thousands of tourists. Places like Lloret de Mar offer the ideal place to spend a few days of sun and sand. The quality of its waters and coastline, with protected nature reserves, unspoilt coves, wide open beaches and paradise dive sites such as the Medes islands in L'Estartit, or the Formigues Islands in Palafrugell are a must for nature and water-sports lovers.
From Portbou, on the border with France , all the way to Blanes, a universe of culture, tradition, coast, sun, sport and unspoilt nature awaits you - spots that will captivate you from first sight and villages packed with history and art.
Costa Brava , between the Mediterranenan and the Pyrenees , is the popularly accepted name of the littoral of the province of Girona .
Its nature, climate and history create a setting of odd, haunting beauty that is hard to grasp, but that never fails to seduce, with its lush vegetation propped against the blue and green immensity of the sea. Right up to the edge of the sea, hanging on occasions over abrupt cliffs, on others in the actual proximity of the beaches, the vegetation paints the fine golden sand green, blending with the ochre of the earth, inland, and together with the dominant landscape. The 16ºC of average annual temperature, with moderate rainfall, and the 2,500 hours of sunshine that illuminate the historic-artistic vestiges, recalling the existence of a notable past, are only the visible aspects of a reality that has a hidden pulse waiting to be discovered. Its 214 kilometres of coastline stretch between Blanes in the south, surrounded by El Maresme and El Montseny, and Portbou in the north, on the French border. Beaches, coves, cliffs and woods sit among renowned places like S'Agaró, Tossa de Mar, Begur, Cadaques and Portlligat. The modern tourist infrastructure of the area has turned Costa Brava into one of Spain 's most popular tourist destinations.

COSTA CÁLIDA

Costa Cálida is an extensive stretch in the Spanish coastline where the harsh mountain landscape prolongs its stark tranquility to the sea edge.
Its horizon of oleanders, prickly pears and wild dwarf palms, that recalls, on some or other watchtower, the danger of piracy and appears with the same solemn calm as in the times of the adventurous sailors prepared to return with their ships full to the brim. The cry of the seagulls and the buzzing of the cicada are sometimes the only sounds that break the luminous atmosphere. Yet there is even more cause for curiosity. The contrast between the old fishing towns and the vegetable garden cities, whose characters it owes to both the almost mythic fertility of the fields and great monuments, might easily make you believe that the distance between the two is actually greater. Murcia is a small region. A short journey of 100 Km. between the two most distant points will reveal very different areas. The mines, the vegetable gardens and the mountains, along with the coastline, have been its main features throughout a long history full of events that very well could pass for legends. Our only goal is to encourage the curiosity of the traveller, as, in such a short space, it would be impossible to combine each and every feature that adds to the appeal of Murcia . Although it can be difficult not to give in to laziness when lying on a beach, it is well worth the effort.

COSTA DA MUERTE

The rugged cliffs that make up Costa da Morte (the Coast of Death) are found in the northeast of Galicia, stretching from Monte Louro Point in the south (in the township of Muros), to the village of Caión in the north.
Following the road, which goes around some truly spectacular scenery, we come to Monte Louro, which has a beautiful beach at its foot. The next town is Carnota, renowned for having a gorgeous beach, as well as a very rich ecosystem. Cee is the most populated village in the area. In its historic quarter, we will find ancient stone houses lining narrow, winding streets. If we keep following the coast, we come to Corcubión, famous for its port, the westernmost one in the entire Iberian Peninsula . Its historic quarter was declared a Historic-Artistic Site, and it preserves several noble mansions, a sign of the city's former splendour.
The town of Fisterra was established on the site of an ancient fishing village, and still preserves its traditional layout. Towns like Muxía, with its famous chapel of Nosa Señora da Barca; Camariñas, where they still hand-make their wonderful bobbin laces; Laxe, with an important fishing port that takes up a wide inlet, and Malpica, located in the region of Bergantiños, mark the journey to Caión, the fishing village where our journey through Costa da Morte ends.

COSTA DE ALMERIA

The province of Almería is located in the south-east of the Iberian Peninsula on the shores of the Mediterranean sea . Its whole extension, which covers 8,774 square kilometres, has a great geographic diversity.
The passing of time has also caused disparities in the landscape. As a result, in Almería, you can enjoy popular, modern tourist resorts and natural areas where mankind has barely left its mark. The climate is Mediterranean , warm and dry, with low rainfall. The number of hours of sun is very high with over 3,000 hours per year. The temperature remains mild throughout the year. It does not fall below an average of 13ºC in winter, nor does it rise above an average 25º C in summer. Thanks to this mild climate, visitors can enjoy all the possibilities offered by the province at any time of year. Almería has been visited by many people throughout its history, perhaps because of its beautiful landscape or perhaps because of its geographical location. The important archaeological remains found in the province have helped researchers discover and analyse the existence of old cultures. On the coast of Almería , you can enjoy varied folklore and plenty of fiestas, inherited from ancestors, as well as popular handicrafts designed with painstaking care (pottery, ceramics, esparto, rugs and marble). Gastronomic specialities such as paprika, gurullos (stews), porridge and seafood soup are also a legacy from the region's rich past.

The journey along the Coast of Cantabria begins on the west coast, fundamentally represented by Santillana del Mar, one of the best preserved historic-artistic sites in Spain and an 11th century medieval hamlet in which medieval, renaissance and baroque buildings mix together. Very close to Santillana are the Altamira Caves , discovered in 1879 and declared World Mankind by UNESCO. They contain coloured wall carvings of bison made by Palaeolithic man. Heading towards Comillas, Cóbreces offers visitors its pretty Cistercian abbey. Once in Comillas, the combination of traditional local architecture stands out, with notable buildings such as the Universidad Pontificia de Comillas. Next on the itinerary is San Vicente de la Barquera, a fishing town par excellence with several pretty beaches.
The eastern coast of Cantabria spreads between the bay of Santander and the town of Castro Urdiales . This stretch of coastline is a succession of cliffs and wonderful beaches. Particularly noteworthy are Pedreña, Isla and Noja, tourist centres par excellence, and Santoña and Laredo . Finally, Castro Urdiales, an ancient Roman port, has many monuments of different styles and from various periods, of great decorative wealth.

COSTA DE LA LUZ

The infinite beaches of Costa de la Luz, lined by pine groves, form an arch from Ayamonte to Tarifa, from the mouth of the Guadiana River to the Strait of Gibraltar .
Costa de la Luz comprises sun and sand; the rivers flow in channels before reaching the sea; water and earth combine in the swamps, estuaries and salt mines. Its name comes from a bright, vivid light that highlights the comeliness of its streets, the whitewash of its walls, the golden hue of the dunes and the reflection of the silver sea, the only greyish tint in this land of colour. Inland you will find varied landscapes of wild sierras, fertile countryside, pastures of fighting bulls, world-renowned vineyards and hidden villages where time passes slowly by. Spring brings with it an explosion of flowers, fiestas and processions; winter, mild and sunny, attracts millions of birds to the area.

COSTA DE VALENCIA

The Valencian Coast stretches along a province with two clearly distinct landscapes: the coast and the mountains.
On the coast lay the prosperous districts that enjoy the fabulous fertile plains, with irrigated crops that form an evergreen mosaic all year round. On the other hand, behind an area of gently sloping foothills in which dry and light-irrigation farming are characteristic, lies the wild, almost unknown inland; the mountainous arch of the Valencia mountain range, cut here and there by its impressive river canyons, stands in a setting dotted with vast pine forests where caves and prehistoric shelters with many cave paintings lie hidden. The low, sandy coastline of shallow waters has only one outstanding geographical feature: Cape Cullera . This is the point where the mountains reach the sea. A barrier of dunes flanks the beaches, as well as some marshy areas and freshwater pools, such as the swamps of Puig and Jaraco (Xeraco), and above all, the lagoon of Valencia . This coastline is reached by four rivers that begin their journey in the mountains: Palancia, Turia, Júcar (Xúquer) and Serpis. These meander down to the coastline where they enter the sea, brimming with marine traffic in and around the ports of Sagunto , Valencia and Gandía. There we find modern sailing facilities for sports vessels and lively tourist centres, from where travellers will have the chance to discover the beauty of the highlands, the mountain spas, camping areas, Iberian and Roman towns, emblazoned houses, castles and towers.

COSTA DEL AZAHAR

Situated on the Spanish Mediterranean coast is Castellón, the northernmost province in the Autonomous Community of Valencia. Castellón, whose littoral is known as Costa del Azahar, is a land of great contrasts, contrasts that formed as a result of the geographical layout. Although the capital is called Castelló de la Plana, (Castelló of the plains), in fact the province has more mountainous areas than flat ones. Thus, opposite the coastal strip that displays an infinite green carpet that is dotted by orange orchards, the interior is wild. Regions rich in history and monuments, and endowed with extraordinary spots that fortunately remain untouched by man. They have the same aspect today that they did centuries ago, when they were visited by medieval men and women.

COSTA DEL GARRAF

In the mouth of the Llobregat in Barcelona , Costa del Garraf is a low, abrupt, sandy coast. The coastline along the Garraf massif is dotted with small coves and from here down to the southern part of Sitges it becomes sandy once again.
The climate is temperate and is characterised by mild winters. The average temperature of the water is 16.3 ºC and reaches a maximum of 26.7 ºC. The most interesting places from the cultural point of view are the museums of Sitges and Vilanova i la Geltrú, the numerous sights, and tourist centres, such as Sant Pere de Ribes and the marinas in La Ginesta and Aiguadolç. The main blue-flagged beaches in Garraf are found in Castelldefels - Sitges: La Ribera, Sant Sebastian, Garraf, Aiguadolc, La Barra, in Vilanova i la Geltru: Ribes Roges and in Cubelles: Playa Larga, Riera Xica.

Places of cultural interest include archaeological sites in Burriac and Mataró, the Baroque architecture in Arenys de Mar and Modernism in Canet and Argentona. Other tourist centres include Malgrat, Arenys de Mar, Sant Andreu de LLavaneras and Alella. Calella de la Costa y El Masnou are blue flag beaches. Other tourist beaches: Pineda, Sant Pol de Mar, Caldes de Estrac, Vilassar de Mar and Premiá de Mar.

COSTA DEL SOL

Costa del Sol takes up about 300 kilometres of the Mediterranean littoral that corresponds to the province of Malaga .
Protected from the northern winds by a mountain chain that in some parts comes down to meet the sea, this sheltered coast is shaped by a succession of extensive beaches, coves almost hidden between cliffs, marinas and anchorage for fishing. The mild climate, infrequency of rainfall and the sea breeze make for semitropical vegetation in which palm and cypress trees, bougainvillaea, oleander and hibiscus are common. The proximity of such different landscapes -the mountain, the valleys blanketed in vegetable gardens and the sea- is, without a doubt, one of the greatest attractions of this coastline which combine all the appeal of the Mediterranean landscape and culture. Residential areas, marinas, golf clubs, entertainment centres, nightclubs and many more tourist attractions have been built around and now coexist within the peaceful ambience of country villages, which have astonishingly conserved their traditional town centres. Summer beach holidays and all the appeal that this can offer along this stretch of the Mediterranean is not, however, the only attractions offered by the Costa del Sol : you will have the chance to uncover the most genuine, authentic features of the Andalusian culture very close by. In addition to the folkloric displays in the tourist centres, you can also experience the lively and popular celebrations. The fiestas, Easter parades, song contests and the bull runs without a doubt claim first place on the list of recommendations for travellers who want to see beyond what first meets the eye. Tasting country wines in the intimate cellars of yore and having some traditional fried fish (cooked to perfection by the local folk) are some of the temptations that will seduce all visitors, specially those that prefer the wonders of local gastronomy over the ever-present international fare.

COSTA DORADA

In the south of Catalonia , Costa Dorada, dotted with seaside villages, is an area of long fishing tradition.
The long beaches are filled with dunes of fine sand. The wide selection of apartments in the area characterises the Costa Dorada as the most popular family holiday destination. Suitable for children and the elderly, it offers an ideal tranquile, restful holiday. The 20 municipalities that make up Costa Dorada stretch along a seacoast of 216 kilometres, with 786 hectares of extensive, clean, sandy beaches washed by crystal, shallow waters. Lying between the sea and the mountain range are wide open areas, home to tranquil villages and fields of crops ranging from vineyards and olive groves to carob, hazelnut, almond trees and vegetable-garden crops. In total the area has over 500,000 hotel beds, many campsites and apartments, and it receives an average of 3,500,000 visitors per year. Inland, places and towns of interest (such as Reus, Valls, Montblanc, Tortosa) and great medieval monasteries are easily accessible: Poblet, Santes Creus and Scala Dei, as well as picturesque spots that are famous for their beautiful scenery (Prades, Siurana), abrupt sierras with big game reserves (Tivissa, Cardó and Ports de Tortosa), and the unique, extensive Ebro Delta with its labyrinth of irrigation channels and pools.

COSTA TROPICAL

We begin our journey on the west coast of Granada known as Costa Tropical. From here to the city of Málaga , we will enjoy the varied landscapes of this rugged coast.
On the first stretch of coastline, at the foot of the mountain range La Contraviesa, which touches upon the province of Granada , the road runs parallel to the shore, bordering the beaches and the foothills that make for a gently winding road. La Rábita is an ideal departure point: an old fishing village, well protected by its small fortress and surrounded by farmland. A short distance on, once past the stretch of rocky coastline, we arrive at La Mamola, another fishing village endowed with an extensive beach. In Castell de Ferro (21 kilometres from La Rábita) you will find a small village set at the foot of a hill: a watchtower reminds us of the threat of piracy, as in many other parts of the coast. From this moment, travellers are entering the most touristy part of the Costa Tropical. The beaches of Poniente, Puerto and Azucenas shape the coast of Motril and are host to a well-known tourist centre. Salobreña is just seven kilometres away. The village, with its narrow, white streets, set at the foot of a hill topped by an Arab castle, is a must. The view from the old fortress stretches over the fertile plain of Guadalfeo, blanketed with sugarcane plantations, as far as Sierra Nevada . Also of great interest is Almuñécar (17 kilometres away), another village crowned by a Muslim castle.

COSTA VASCA

The Cantabrian Sea and the Pyrenees create the backdrop of a landscape composed of all shades of green, rugged coasts with short estuaries, and mountains covered with beech and oak.
For centuries its inhabitants have been sailors, farm labourers and shepherds and have spoken a language totally unlike any other and whose origins should be sought more in legend than in history. It is said that it all began with «Sugaar», one of the Basque mythological characters who had a love affair with a beautiful princess who lived in Mundaka. From their union Juan Zuria, was born, the first lord of Bizkaia (Biscay). The Basques, however, believe that they are descendants of the land: the euskaldunak. A nation who retained its traditions, who did not manage to dominate the invaders and who formed an «ethnic isle». In the 14th century Basque fishermen had already reached Iceland and Greenland where they settled on the coast of Newfoundland and Canada . Juan Sebastián Elcano, the first man to travel around the world, was from Getaria and Legazpi, conqueror of the Philippines , from Zumárraga. Beside the fishing villages lie the farming lands. The country house continues to be the core of the Basque country life. Agriculture, clearly smallholder, is based on intensive farming, which means the land is fully exploited. The other traditional trade in the Basque Land is shepherding. The shepherds generally owned their own flocks. When this was not the case, they emigrated. The United States and Canada became the new home of many of these shepherds. The main industry for which the Basque Country is known today began developing at the beginning of the 20th century, along with trade.

The next destination is Luarca, a traditional fishing port with a lighthouse and beautiful cemetery overlooking the cliffs. Another fishing town is Cudillero, with its colourful hamlet sat on the side of a mountain. The industrial town of Avilés provides travellers with a pedestrian urban centre looked down on by the old church of Sabugo (13th century) and, on the other side of the cape of Peñas , the fishing centres of Luanco and Candás. Slightly inland is the city of Gijón , with its ancient quarter made up of the Santa Catalina hill and the neighbourhood known as Cimadevilla. The eastern coast of Asturias is an invitation to visit its long beaches through historic localities such as Ribadesella and Llanes and fishing villages such as Lastres or Tazones. All of this accompanied by examples of American emigrant architecture as can be seen in Colombres.

Cedeira, an important fishing port and holiday area, is reached by a road hidden in the mountains. Only 12 kilometres away (seven if you take the old «pilgrim way»), is San Andrés de Teixido, a place to which all Galicians had to pilgrimage at least once in their lives to save their souls from sorrow (according to an old saying « after death goes he to Saint Andrew, who did not go in life»). It was the most important pilgrimage in Galicia until the pilgrimage in Santiago . Mounds of stones brought by the pilgrims can still be seen today on both sides of the way. These stones will 'speak' on the Final Judgement Day to say who fulfilled the promise of going to Saint Andrew. The plant namoradoira , said to cure love-related problems, grows around this area. Here in the Sierra da Capelada, you will find O Cabo do Mundo (the End of the World), the highest cliff in Atlantic Europe. RIAS BAIXAS

On the coast of Pontevedra we find the beautiful beaches of Rías Baixas, surrounded by a rugged relief. It is said that this is the mark left by the hand of God when he washed his fingers after creating the world.
Toward the capital, Pontevedra, which borders the peninsula of Morrazo , there are hidden places such as the inlets of San Simón, Aldán and Bueu, the Crucero de Hio (the most beautiful in all Galicia ) and, closing the estuary, the Islas de Ons and Onza with an interesting fauna amongst which the cormorants stand out. Combarro is just a stone's throw away from Pontevedra. It is one of the best preserved raised granaries in all Galicia , and also Galician crosses. Nearby, in Poio Monastery, rests Santa Trahamunda, of whom it is said cures all kinds of deafness; and, further up, that of Armenteira, where legend has it that a monk spent 300 years enchanted by a bird's song. If you continue along the coast, you will see the nature areas of A Lanzada and O Grove, famous for its beaches and healing waters. Next we have Vilagarcía, now connected to Arousa Island by a bridge.
The Atlantic Ocean makes inroads into the land amidst legendary forests to form the Rías Baixas (literally: low, tidal inlets). The area's exceptional beaches, rugged scenery and the wealth of flavours present in its unique cuisine are just a few of the treasures waiting for you in this part of Galicia .
The Rías Baixas are lands of lighthouses and ancient stone crosses, of waterwheels by cascading streams and crystalline pools. There are also many shrines and Romanesque churches, prehistoric dolmens and stones covered in moss and creepers, witnesses of foregone civilizations of Romans and Celts.
Inland there are forests, deep green in colour, where the fog and mist hang between the trees creating an enchanting, mysterious atmosphere. These luxuriant mountains are, according to tradition and legend, home to witches and the Santa Compaña (a mythical procession of the dead) this kind of folklore is ever-present in Galician popular culture.
Not far away, the tidal inlets open out, natural wonders where the sea makes its way inland giving rise to spectacular landscapes, exceptional beaches and areas of incalculable ecological value. Come and discover the unspoiled coastline, the dunes and the islets dotted over deep-blue seawater of internationally recognized quality.
The smell of salt water impregnates the streets and harbours of the numerous fishing villages to be found in the Rías Baixas. To enjoy this privileged location's ecological wealth to the full, we recommend a visit to the majestic Cíes Islands , jewel of the Atlantic Islands national Park. This archipelago is a unique natural paradise, whose rocks and waters are home to a host of rich flora and fauna. Take a stroll on one of its trails and you will discover sandy beaches, caves and cliffs. The islands also have a camp site. With capacity for up to 800 people, this is the only place where it is permitted to spend the night. From the Cíes Islands you also have a view over the entire entrance to the Vigo estuary and can enjoy its stunning sunsets.
Rías Baixas means beaches, landscapes and nature, but we should not forget its rich gastronomy. There is a huge selection available, with the obligatory seafood, fish and meat, and, of course, a good Albariño wine on the table. Any time of year is perfect to sample the region's internationally renowned soups and dishes, not forgetting its desserts, aguardiente (eau de vie) and queimada (a hot punch, typical of Galicia ). In the summer months, there are numerous local fairs and gastronomic festivals. Perhaps the most outstanding isthe Albariño festival, held in Cambados, designated of national tourist interest.
Welcome to this privileged area of Galicia , with fishing communities that will offer you a warm welcome and natural wonders that will captivate you from the moment you arrive.
